چکیده

We analyze the wavelength-dependent variability of a sample of spectroscopically confirmed active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from near-UV (NUV ) variable sources in the GALEX Time Domain Survey that have a large amplitude of optical variability (difference-flux S/N > 3) in the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1 MDS). By matching GALEX and PS1 epochs in 5 bands (NUV , gP1, rP1, iP1, zP1) in time, and taking their flux difference, we create co-temporal difference-flux spectral energy distributions (∆ f SEDs) using two chosen epochs for each of the 23 objects in our sample on timescales of about a year. We confirm the "bluer-when-brighter" trend reported in previous studies, and measure a median spectral index of the ∆ f SEDs of αλ = 2.1 that is consistent with an accretion disk spectrum. We further fit the ∆ f SEDs of each source with a standard accretion disk model in which the accretion rate changes from one epoch to the other. In our sample, 17 out of 23 (∼74%) sources are well described by this variable accretion-rate disk model, with a median average characteristic disk temperature T̄ ∗ of 1.2×105 K that is consistent with the temperatures expected given the distribution of accretion rates and black hole masses inferred for the sample. Our analysis also shows that the variable accretion rate model is a better fit to the ∆ f SEDs than a simple power law. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks – black hole physics – galaxies: nuclei – ultraviolet: general – surveys

A BOINC based, citizen-science project for pixel Spectral Energy Distribution fitting of resolved galaxies in multi-wavelength surveys

In this work we present our experience from the first year of theSkyNet Pan-STARRS1 Optical Galaxy Survey (POGS) project. This citizen-scientist driven research project uses the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) middleware and thousands of Internet-connected computers to measure the resolved galactic structural properties of ∼100,000 low redshift galaxies. We are combin...

Pan-STARRS and PESSTO search for an optical counterpart to the LIGO gravitational-wave source GW150914

We searched for an optical counterpart to the first gravitational-wave source discovered by LIGO (GW150914), using a combination of the Pan-STARRS1 wide-field telescope and the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects (PESSTO) spectroscopic follow-up programme. As the final LIGO sky maps changed during analysis, the total probability of the source being spatially coincident with our...

Deep-Survey Constraints on X-ray Outbursts from Galactic Nuclei

Luminous X-ray outbursts with variability amplitudes as high as ∼ 1 000 have been detected from a small number of galactic nuclei. These events are likely associated with transient fueling of nuclear supermassive black holes. In this paper, we constrain X-ray outbursts with harder spectra, higher redshifts, and lower luminosities than have been studied previously. We performed a systematic surv...

A Highly Complete Spectroscopic Survey of the Goods-n Field

We present a table of redshifts for 2907 galaxies and stars in the 145 arcmin HST ACS GOODSNorth, making this the most spectroscopically complete redshift sample obtained to date in a field of this size. We also include the redshifts, where available, in a table containing just under 7000 galaxies from the ACS area with Ks,AB < 24.5 measured from a deep Ks image obtained with WIRCam on the CFHT...

The Pan-STARRS1 Small Area Survey 2

The Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System 1 (Pan-STARRS1) survey is acquiring multi-epoch imaging in five bands (gP1, rP1, iP1, zP1, yP1) over the entire sky north of declination −30◦ (the 3π survey). In 2011 July a test area of about 70 deg2 was observed to the expected final depth of the main survey. In this, the first of a series of papers targeting the galaxy count and cluste...
